Gategill, Blencathra in April The northern Lake District has a huge variety of holiday attractions within easy range of the cottage, to suit every taste. A collection of up to date brochures are ready for you to browse through on arrival.
Good walking starts from the house, either up Blencathra, which towers 2847 feet above the village, or over fields, lanes and lower fells for the less adventurous. Cat Bells and the Derwent fells in August

Local village amenities include:

  • A children's playground, which can be seen from the house
  • A couple of pubs.
  • A welcoming church.
  • A post office and newspaper "room" (has to be seen to be believed!)
  • A regular bus service connecting Keswick and Penrith.

The nearest supermarket is in Keswick (3 miles), which also has a theatre, a Saturday market, and lots of interesting shops, and good eating places. Penrith (12 miles) has the best bookshop in the north west.
